Introduction: You can now use many search engines from any website you are at by downloading free software called a search toolbar. Many of the toolbars also offer extra features like pop-up blockers, the ability to post to a blog, the ability to get notified of new email and the ability to highlight search terms on any page. Many search engines offer search toolbars and most require Windows and Internet Explorer 5.0 and above.
Alexa Toolbar [new window][broken link] Claims to have the best toolbar popup killer and was named a CNet Editors Pick. Uses Google to search the Web and combines the results with Alexa information. See a site's popularity, related links, user reviews and contact information. Has a nice WayBack Machine that is a library of how websites looked in the past.
Google Toolbar [new window][broken link] Google offers an excellent toolbar that attaches to the top of your web browser. Since Google bought Blogger.com, members can also post to their personal Blogs with a click or link a weblog to a page being visited. The latest version also contains a pop-up blocker, a form filler, the ability to check the page rank of any site, the ability to highlight search terms on any page and more.
Yahoo! Companion [new window][broken link] This will notify you whenever you receive new Yahoo email. Notifications like that could get annoying if you get a lot of spam. Also bookmark your favorite websites, highlight search terms and search the internet. Also search just images or just news. Yahoo now has a pop-up blocker as well.
Ebay Toolbar [new window][broken link] This is the ultimate tool for Ebayers. It keeps track of any items you want and alerts you before the bidding is over. Also search the Web or Ebay and allow Account Guard to notify you if you are actually on Ebay or PayPal or on a possible fraudulent site.
Comet Toolbar [new window][broken link] This one lets you search using Google and also installs the good old Comet Cursor. What it lacks is much else other than a lot of advertising through embedded links.
Altavista Toolbar [new window][broken link] Search Altavista, search the site you're on or use their nice image search. The big feature on this one is the ability to translate pages into ten different languages. Also has highlight feature, popup blocker, area code search, metric conversion function and currency exchange tool.
