Introduction: This is a real industry, profession and job opportunity. Companies are very eager to gain knowledge of how they are doing in regards to customer service, cleanliness, marketing and customer satisfaction to name a few areas. They pay Mystery Shopping companies to recruit people to "shop" their stores and then fill out surveys as to how their experiences went. "Shoppers" get reimbursed for the items they purchase and also get paid a fee for doing the "shop". This industry is not restricted to shopping alone. There are also opportunities to get paid for watching movies, going to amusement parks, conducting customer surveys, eating at restaurants and much more. I have personally done shops myself.

Jancyn [new window][broken link] A professional mystery shopping and apartment evaluation company. You must accept PayPal payments to get paid. They say they give preference to certified shoppers. See the tips section at the bottom of this page.
BestMark [new window][broken link] A mystery shopping and market research company that partners with clients in industries including restaurants, retail establishments, banks, automotive service operations, and casinos to provide feedback regarding the overall guest experience.
TIPS:
$ Many Pay to Shop companies have you submit writing samples as if you went on a shop or describing a good or bad shopping experience. Save these samples on your computer so you can just copy and paste them into the applications.
$ Although you do not have to, and I haven't yet but still get jobs, becoming silver or gold
certified as a mystery shopper with MysteryShop.org will get you more jobs with companies. There are fees to pay. They also list shopping opportunities.
$ The better you "shop", the more job offers you will get. This is a serious business
and mystery shopping companies and the companies they work for want accurate surveys with details and correct grammar. You must also follow all instructions exactly.
$ Many mystery shopping companies require you to accept PayPal
payments as the way of getting paid or reimbursed. If you haven't heard of PayPal or haven't signed up for an account, it is a nice free online service that allows you to make payments or receive them.
